Bouncy Buildings is an annual public project presenting instant
architecture from an international group of architects.
Each year Bouncy Buildings focuses on one country, inviting the best
established and emerging talent from architecture to design a ‘bouncy
castle’. The inflatable buildings will be exhibited together as
a series of outdoor events where the public will be able to test the
results. The buildings will be on tour during 2007, travelling to London,
Stockholm and Tokyo.
For 2007 Bouncy Buildings has invited three architects from the UK:
Sergison Bates Architects
Peter Cook + CRAB Studio
The AOC
Bouncy castles are associated with children, play and leisure time,
their aesthetics most often borrowed from the world of fairytales. But
can bouncy castles be used to investigate issues of contemporary architecture?
By testing new possibilities for architecture through the large scale
and temporary qualities of bouncy buildings, a large public audience
will have the opportunity to interact with full scale architectural
models. The mobility of the structures allows us to show them in very
different contexts and cultures.
Each year we will be commissioning a new series of bouncy buildings
from a selected country, eventually building a bouncy town, or even
a city, designed by the world's most outstanding architects.
We will be organising seminars, workshops and
competitions alongside the main events to promote further public debate
around issues of taste, tradition and the future development of our
towns and cities.
